In a first in Uttar Pradesh, rarest of rare surgical case successfully operated at Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital, Kaushambi NICU
Yashoda Super Speciality Hospital, Kaushambi has become a ray of hope for bedside surgical ligation of PDA in a tiny newborn with refractory cardiac failure for entire Uttar Pradesh state.

It is indeed astounding that the operation theatre to undertake ligation of patent ductus arteriosus (persistent abnormal communication between lung vessel and systemic vessel) of sixteen days old delicate newborn baby (baby of Anjali) admitted in state of the art tertiary level NICU at Yashoda Hospital, Kaushambi was shifted to bedside of the baby in NICU on 4th May 2017 and the persistent abnormal connection PDA was surgically ligated successfully by renowned pediatric cardiothorasis surgeon Dr. Raja Joshi and his team.
Dr.Ajit Kumar, Consultant Neonatology was instrumental in execution of this great endeavour. Baby of Anjali was an extra-mural baby born at Swami Dayanand Hospital, Shahadra. On Day 6 of life, the baby was admitted with presenting complaint of respiratory distress. The baby also developed shock and acute renal failure.
The baby was put on mechanical ventilator. Dr.Ajit Kumar, consultant, Neonatologist clinically evaluated and attributed the clinical condition to PDA. Echocardiography evaluation done showed large PDA which is persistant abnormal communication between lung vessel and systemetic vessel. Baby’s shock was aggressively managed with inotropes. Baby also showed the clinical signs of heart failure which did not show significant improvement despite medication.
In such a refractory heart failure, surgical ligaiton is the only modality to save the baby. Shifting such a sick tiny baby to operation theatre is a daunting task. Bedside surgical ligation is novel modality for treatment which is being done in developed countries.
Yashoda Hospital became torch-bearer in the whole Uttar Pradesh by conducting this rare bedside surgical feat of PDA ligation in this baby. With this successful bedside cardiac surgery, the twenty bedded tertiary NICU with sophisticated gadgets at Yashoda Hospital, Kaushambi has become a ray of hope for bedside surgical ligation of PDA in a tiny newborn with refractory cardiac failure for entire Uttar Pradesh state. The baby was discharged on 11th May 2017 following successful bedside surgical ligation and is currently symptomatic and thriving well.
